Story Time – 1947 English orthopedic surgeon Paul Brand is living with and studying lepers in Vellore, India. One day Dr. Brand was unable to turn a key in a large rusty door lock. A leper boy of 12 saw his difficulty and asked if her could help. The youngster easily turned the key to unlock the door. Dr. Brand examined the boys finger and hand…..the key had cut the flesh all the way to the bone. The boy had been completely unaware what was happening to his fingers while turning the key.

Dr. Brand immediately figured out that the desensitized nerve endings in the hands of lepers made it possible to keep turning the key, long past the point where a healthy person would have found it painful to continue. The young boy had never felt the pain, and thus was able to eventually unlock the door.

Healthy people posses strength they never use, precisely because resistant pressure causes pain.
