The BackBlast:

As we kicked off the 6th and final week of the Phoenix Challenge, 15 strong pax—plus a very selfless proctor, Bronco—joined YHC for a Rising designed to help us all blast out this pandemic stronger than we came into it.

Warm-Up: Mosey over to the football field with a few buttkickers and high knees.

Exit Velocity: Six segments of accelerating partner work for time.

1.  Flat on Your Back
  • Flutter Kick x50 each (4-count IC together)
  • Big Bois x100 total (work simultaneously until total reps equal 100)
  • Bear Crawl 100 yards total (one partner bear crawls while the other walks; switch until yards total 100)
2.  Pushing Up
  • Merkins x100 total tag team style (One partner completes reps, the other holds plank; count sequentially to 100, picking up the count where partner left off to 100)
  • Burpees x50 total (work simultaneously until total reps equal 50)
  • Lunge Walk 100 yards total (one partner lunge walks while the other walks; switch until yards total 100)
3.  Standing Strong
  • Squats x50 each (down-count IC together)
  • Bobby Hurley’s x100 total (work simultaneously until total reps equal 100)
  • Broad Jump 100 yards total (one partner broad jumps while the other walks; switch until yards total 100)

5.  Max Acceleration
  • Smurf Jacks x50 each (4-count IC together)
  • Jump Rope x100 total (each rep is 2 bounces; work simultaneously until total reps equal 100)
  • Skip 100 yards together
6.  Liftoff!
  • Motivators down from 6 (IC together)
  • Suicide Sprints Relay Style (each partner must complete any 2 legs of the 4-leg, 100-yard suicide)
  • Sprint 100 yards together

Naked MoleRat: With partner work, the ability to put more pax in the winner’s circle, and an accelerating buildup that reinforced  the Phoenix Challenge’s purpose, this was absolutely one of those kinds of workouts that was better on paper than in execution. Not that it was a total failure. But the combination of not having a single leader taking the pax through the workout coupled with the need to stop working out to read what to do next every few minutes really sapped the energy and momentum out of the workout. Plus with the exception of the Merkin/Burpee segment, it felt like the other segments never really pushed the Pax. In the never-ending need to balance keeping it simple with making it creative, this is definitely one to grow on.

CoT: Gratitude for all the pax who have stepped up. Bronco for proctoring today’s beatdown. Kodak, Linus, RA, Alliance, and Kipling/Ocho for designing some killer Rising Workouts. Alliance for managing all the points seamlessly behind the scenes. And countless others for running APFT tests, filming videos, and simply showing their support by participating. It’s been really inspiring to see how many men stepped up to help make this challenge a reality. YHC hopes you all got as much out of it as I did. GRATITUDE!
