WORKOUT:
All PAX started at one end of the football field goal line. The workout was to complete 4 exercises, sprint to the other end of the field, recover jog back to the end where the exercises were performed. The emphasis was on speed and how many rounds could be completed within the allotted amount of time. The exercises to be performed were as follows:
- 10 burpees
- 10 air squats
- 10 push ups
- 10 sit ups
Prior to commencement, PAX were strongly encouraged to ensure full range of motion and to do the exercises strictly (see CoT for rationale why outside of the obvious reason). The 10 reps represented a 10-count if/when a boxer were to find him/herself on the canvas. Conceptually, the idea would be for each round of exercises/sprint/recovery run to be about the amount of time as a boxing round in that of 3 minutes. Rinse repeat to see how many rounds each PAX could get.
On the jog back, a PAX spoke to me about how his original strategy was to perform a certain way and that the game plan went well for awhile. In the later rounds, however, the plan started to look differently. I reminded the PAX that as a boxer, that’s how thing go. I offered the quote to this PAX that Mike Tyson said which was “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” That’s life. The best plans are great. We shouldn’t stop making them. That said, life has its own plan.

CoT:
PAX were told by me that my desire was to play to something comfortable in that of the boxing theme and to keep things on the surface. PAX were told that I wanted to switch gears and be uncomfortable and be more vulnerable and move away from surface level noise. In a line from hip hop artist, J. Cole, from his song “Love Yourz.” There’s a line that says, “The good news is you came a long way. The bad news is you went the wrong way,” I likened this to doing an exercise and cheating the range just to get the job done. I said that I wondered how or where else I did that. Where had I effectively “phoned it in?” Was it with my wife or kids? Was it me thinking I was really there physically but not there emotionally or relationally? I used myself as an example in that I used to think I was doing well with what I chose to eat…but that I wondered where the extra weight started to stack up. It was because I wasn’t being honest. I challenged myself and those who listened to live life with integrity.
