Excerpts from Plays Well with Others: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong by Eric Barker

Adrenaline makes the heart go fonder and drives positive sentiment

  • You fell in love because you did fun things, not the other way around
  • Boost the positive sentiment override – why did you fall in love?
  • Support your partner to be their ideal self – don’t criticize or blame

The Michelangelo Effect – Help Them Achieve Their Telos

The Michelangelo phenomenon is an interpersonal process observed by psychologists where romantic partners influence or ‘sculpt’ each other. Over time, the Michelangelo effect causes individuals to develop towards what they consider their “ideal selves”.

3 R’s to Increasing The Positive Sentiment

  • Rekindle the relationship – what made it exciting? Do it!
  • Remind yourself of the intimacy – what is needed?
  • Rewrite Your Story Over and Over – Align the stories
    • What is it now Vs What it could be?
    • Support your partner in getting what they want most to achieve

All shared some personal anecdotes about the reading and their perspectives about accelerating isn’t about staying static. We all had some great input and a fellow HIM shared how about how he got some recent feedback that was hard to hear but took it and looked for opportunities to improve.
